Security Guard / Private Investigator Licence: Guarantor Information Form (Form 0178E)

If you are unable to find a guarantor to help you fill out your Guarantor Information Form to obtain your Ontario security guard and / or private investigator licence, the affiliated notary publics of Neighbourhood Notary can help act as your guarantor.

Security Guards and Private Investigators in Ontario 

To work as a security guard or private investigator in Ontario, you must have a valid licence. As well, licences must be renewed every two (2) years on your birthday. 

To be eligible for a security guard or private investigator licence you must:
  • be 18 years old or older; 
  • be legally entitled to work in Canada; 
  • have a clean criminal record according to Ontario Regulation 37/08, pursuant to the Private Security and Investigative Services Act, 2005;
  • complete the mandatory basic training and test for security guards or private investigators; and 
  • have an Ontario testing completion number from your mandatory test. 
  
What you need to submit to obtain your licence 

As part of your application for a security guard and / or private investigator licence in Ontario, you must submit the following items: 
  • your Ontario testing completing number; 
  • a passport-quality photo that meets photo requirements;
  • identification documents that prove your identity and your eligibility to work in Canada; 
  • a completed Guarantor Information Form that has been signed and dated by your guarantor; and 
  • the appropriate payment for your licence type.

Guarantor Information Form 

To obtain your security guard and / or private investigator licence you must complete a Guarantor Information Form. A guarantor is a person who confirms your identity and that the identification information you provided is true and accurate.

All applicants must have a guarantor confirm their identity. A guarantor can be someone who is at least 18 years old and has known you for at least two (2) years (i.e. friend, family member, neighbour) and be available by telephone. If you do not know anyone who has known you for at least two (2) years, a notary public can act as your guarantor. 

Provide your completed Guarantor Information Form to your guarantor to be filled out by them. Your first and last name must match on both documents (unless you are able to provide a legal name change document with your applicaiton). You must also show your guarantor the same two original identification documents that you are using in your licence application. Then your guarantor will fill out the section of the Guarantor Information Form required by them and provide it back to you to form part of your security guard and / or private investigator licence application.
Please note that after your guarantor signs your form it is only valid for ninety (90) days before it expires.
